Decreased Enrollments Expected Due to FAFSA Issues

As the deadline for filling out the FAFSA approaches, fewer students are completing the important financial aid form, sparking concerns about college access and affordability. According to the National College Attainment Network, only 31% of the high school class of 2024 had submitted the FAFSA as of March 8, marking a significant decline from previous years.

Anne Zinn, a school counselor at Norwich Free Academy in Connecticut, expressed her concern saying, “We are getting to a point where kids are just giving up on it. They are so extremely frustrated they just don’t know what to do.” Mark Kantrowitz, a financial aid expert, added, “There’s also a psychological aspect of this. Students have no confidence that they are going to get the financial aid they need to make college affordable and they are opting out.”

The FAFSA is the gateway to federal aid money, including loans, work study, and grants, which do not need to be repaid. Under the new aid formula, an additional 2.1 million students should be eligible for the maximum Pell Grant, but the slow pace of FAFSA submissions could impact the number of Pell Grant recipients this year.

FAFSA completion is crucial for college access, as students who submit the form are 84% more likely to immediately enroll in college. However, many families have historically been deterred from completing the FAFSA due to misconceptions about eligibility, the complexity of the application, or lack of information.
