Rebekah, with a double major in agricultural business and sustainable agricultural production, made the decision to stay on at the farm after her graduation in 2023. Her love for the business and marketing side of farming fueled her commitment to the family business. Similarly, Sarah, with a degree in animal science, knew from a young age that she wanted to be a part of the farm forever.
In February, the sisters joined their father and stepmother as co-owners of Alstede Farms, making the farm majority women-owned. This highlights a shift in the farming industry, showing that women are increasingly becoming key decision-makers in agriculture.
According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, there were about 1.22 million female producers in 2022, representing 36% of all producers. Women are deeply involved in making day-to-day decisions and are more likely to handle record-keeping and financial management than men. As younger women like Rebekah and Sarah take on these key roles, they will need to navigate financial challenges like high interest rates and climate change.
The farming industry faces challenges with consolidating farms, increasing debt, and weather extremes due to climate change.
