Who is eligible for free tax filing through the IRS this season

Tax season is here, and many Americans are looking for easy and free ways to file their taxes. The IRS has introduced the Direct File pilot program in 12 states, which allows eligible taxpayers to file their taxes for free. The Treasury estimates that 19 million taxpayers may be eligible for Direct File this season, with the highest number of eligible filers in California, Texas, and New York.

In addition to Direct File, taxpayers can also take advantage of IRS Free File, a public-private partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance. This program offers free tax filing options for individuals with adjusted gross incomes of $79,000 or less. Free File has seen a nearly 15% increase in returns this season compared to the previous year.

Other free tax filing options this season include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Tax Counseling for the Elderly, and private company software. With so many free options available, taxpayers have no excuse not to file their taxes on time. Make sure to take advantage of these resources to file your taxes easily and for free this season.
