In the world of C-suite acronyms, a new member has joined the ranks: the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, or CAIO. This title has gained popularity across various sectors, with organizations like eBay, the U.S. Department of Defense, and many others embracing the role.

According to LinkedIn’s latest report on AI at work, the number of companies with a “Head of AI” position globally has more than tripled in the past five years, with a 13% increase since December 2022. Alteryx’s Enterprise of the Future report also reveals that over a quarter of leaders believe that hiring a CAIO is a top priority for preparing for the future.

Despite this growing trend, it’s crucial for companies to ensure that they have the right foundation in place to support a CAIO. Nick Elprin, CEO of Domino Data Lab, points out two common pitfalls in incorporating a CAIO into an organization: mismatched expectations and hiring someone who is narrowly focused on technical aspects.

Prag Mishra, Chief AI Officer of Armada, emphasizes the importance of communication skills for CAIOs, as they must be able to explain AI concepts in simple terms to other decision-makers. He believes that the implications of using AI should be understood by the entire senior management team.

While not all organizations may be suitable for a CAIO role, the role is expected to become more integral as AI technology continues to evolve. Mishra anticipates that more companies will need an AI executive in the coming years.

When it comes to the end use of AI, experts stress the importance of having a clear purpose and measuring the impact of AI initiatives.
