Steward Health Care System, based in Massachusetts, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Southern District Court of Texas. Despite its financial struggles, Steward Health Care System operates 33 community hospitals across nine states, employing over 30,000 individuals.

In a bid to rescue Steward Health Care System from bankruptcy, its landlord Medical Properties Trust Inc. has stepped in to provide crucial funding. Medical Properties Trust, a US real estate trust specializing in health care facilities, is set to offer initial debtor-in-possession financing of $75 million, with the potential for an additional loan of up to $225 million under certain conditions. This move comes after Medical Properties Trust previously provided a $60 million bridge loan to Steward Health Care System and deferred rent payments.

Steward Health Care System’s CEO, Ralph de la Torre, cited rising costs and inadequate reimbursement from government payors as key factors leading to the bankruptcy filing. The delay in the sale of its physician business unit further compounded the company’s financial woes, necessitating the search for alternative funding sources.
