Ranking of the World’s Busiest Airports in 2023

Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we bring you the latest and most valuable insights on business news. Today, we’re diving into the world of international travel and airport rankings, showcasing the trends and shifts that occurred last year.

According to the Airports Council International’s preliminary ranking, international travel made a strong comeback in 2023, propelling airports worldwide to new heights in passenger traffic. Dubai International Airport notably rose to the second spot, a significant jump from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019. Similarly, Tokyo Haneda International Airport saw a remarkable 55% increase in passenger traffic, securing the fifth spot after being ranked 16th the previous year.

Overall, global airports catered to 8.5 billion passengers in 2023, marking a 27% uptick from 2022. While this surge is a positive sign for airlines with vast international networks, ultralow-cost, domestic-focused U.S. carriers have faced challenges amidst the evolving travel landscape. Domestic U.S. airports witnessed substantial growth in passenger numbers, but some experienced a decline in rankings compared to the peak of the pandemic when international travel restrictions hindered long-haul journeys.

Notably, Denver International Airport, a key hub for United Airlines, welcomed nearly 78 million travelers last year, representing a 12% increase from 2022. However, the airport slipped to sixth place in ACI’s ranking, down from third place. In contrast, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Air Lines’ primary hub, retained its position as the busiest airport, serving a staggering 104.7 million passengers.
