Small airports are overwhelmed by an influx of flights for solar eclipse viewing

As the solar eclipse captivated audiences across the United States on Monday, smaller airports had their time to shine. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that flights at airports from Burlington, Vermont, to southern Illinois were briefly halted to accommodate the high demand for prime views of the phenomenon.

Normally, flight disruptions are caused by bad weather or heavy traffic in major city hubs, but this time, smaller airports took the spotlight. According to NASA, the best views of the eclipse stretched from Texas through Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, and up to northwestern New York and Maine.

Airports like Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro, Illinois, and Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport in Vermont saw a surge in reservations for eclipse flights, with Southern Illinois Airport reaching its maximum threshold for small propeller aircraft and larger jets and turboprops.

Dave Carman, deputy director of aviation operations at Burlington International Airport, stated that they were expecting between 100 and 130 general aviation planes on Monday, making it the busiest day for the airport.

For aviation enthusiasts, airlines like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines offered special eclipse flights for passengers to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon from the sky. United Airlines reported a significant increase in bookings to San Antonio, Cleveland, and Little Rock, Arkansas, during the eclipse.

Overall, the eclipse not only brought excitement for sky-watchers but also presented a unique opportunity for smaller airports and businesses in the area to capitalize on the surge in tourism. From airline bookings to hotel reservations, the eclipse was a hot topic that had everyone looking towards the sky.
