Nearly 78,000 borrowers to have $5.8 billion in student debt forgiven by Biden

The Biden administration recently announced a major milestone in its effort to provide relief to student loan borrowers. On Thursday, it revealed plans to forgive $5.8 billion in student debt for 77,700 borrowers through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

This announcement comes as President Joe Biden continues to prioritize addressing the student debt crisis in America. In addition to the $5.8 billion forgiveness, the administration also plans to notify another 380,000 public service workers that they are on track to have their debt canceled within the next two years.

The U.S. Department of Education has been actively working to provide loan forgiveness to eligible borrowers, following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a sweeping $400 billion loan forgiveness plan proposed by the Biden administration last June. To date, nearly 4 million people have had their education debts cleared, amounting to $143.6 billion in relief.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of these forgiveness measures, stating that public servants like teachers, nurses, social workers, and firefighters deserve access to the debt relief they are entitled to under the law.

The PSLF program, signed into law in 2007, allows certain not-for-profit and government employees to have their federal student loans canceled after 10 years of on-time payments. Despite its potential benefits, the program has faced challenges over the years, with many borrowers experiencing confusion and misinformation from loan servicers.

However, the Biden administration has been working to address these issues and improve access to loan forgiveness for eligible borrowers. Prior to the administration’s efforts, only a small fraction of borrowers had received relief under the PSLF program. Since 2021, however, over 870,000 borrowers have had their debt canceled under the program.

Overall, the Biden administration’s commitment to providing relief to student loan borrowers, particularly those in public service roles, is a significant step towards addressing the student debt crisis in the United States. By forgiving billions of dollars in debt and making the loan forgiveness process more accessible, the administration is helping to alleviate the financial burdens faced by millions of Americans.
