This update allows users to import key details needed to verify returns before filing. This small but significant change addresses the main issue that has been preventing successful Direct File returns from being filed.
Now, when e-filing your taxes through Direct File, you can easily validate your return by importing the previous year’s adjusted gross income or the prior year’s temporary pin from the IRS. This new feature streamlines the process and minimizes potential errors, making it easier for taxpayers to file their returns accurately and on time.
It’s important to note that Direct File eligibility is limited to those with simple tax returns this filing season. This includes individuals in 12 pilot states, such as Arizona, California, Florida, New York, and Texas, among others. The program only accepts certain forms of income, like Form W-2 wages, Social Security retirement income, unemployment earnings, and interest of $1,500 or less.
To qualify for Direct File, you must also claim the standard deduction and meet certain criteria related to tax credits and deductions. The IRS estimates that one-third of federal income tax returns could potentially use Direct File this season, with 19 million taxpayers currently eligible. The agency hopes to see 100,000 filings this season, with roughly 60,000 taxpayers already taking advantage of this free tax filing option.
