Exciting news in the automotive industry as Honda Motor and its joint venture partners have announced a whopping $11 billion investment in Ontario, Canada. This investment aims to create a “comprehensive EV value chain,” positioning Honda as a key player in the electric vehicle market.

The new North American electric vehicle epicenter will include assembly and battery plants, as well as other facilities to support the production of all-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles. With vehicle production set to begin in 2028, the annual capacity is projected to reach 240,000 units once fully operational. This significant investment in Alliston, Ontario, aligns with Honda’s ambitious goal of offering exclusively all-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles by 2040.

Despite the cautious approach taken by some automakers in the EV space, Honda sees this investment as a strategic move to meet future demand in North America. The battery plant, with a capacity of 36 gigawatt hours per year, will play a crucial role in supporting Honda’s EV production.

Furthermore, this project is expected to create at least 1,000 new jobs, contributing to the existing workforce of 4,200 employees at Honda’s manufacturing facilities in Ontario. The Canadian government has shown strong support for this initiative, providing assistance in tax credits and incentives to facilitate Honda’s investment in the region.

This landmark investment by Honda comes on the heels of a $4.4 billion commitment for a new U.S. battery plant in Ohio, showcasing the company’s dedication to establishing a robust EV supply chain in North America. With formal discussions underway and ongoing negotiations with joint venture partners, Honda is poised to solidify its plans in the coming months.
