Ethereum Liquid Restaking Boosts DeFi TVL to $100B in First Quarter of 2024

Introducing Liquid Restaking: Driving DeFi TVL to $100 Billion in Q1 2024

The first quarter of 2024 witnessed a remarkable surge in the total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance (DeFi), almost doubling compared to the previous quarter. This exponential growth can be attributed, in part, to the innovative liquid restaking activities happening on the Ethereum network. Protocols like Lido and EigenLayer have played a pivotal role in popularizing liquid staking and restaking, leading to the expansion of DeFi TVL.

Recent analysis indicates a substantial increase in DeFi TVL, skyrocketing from $36 billion in Q4 2023 to nearly $97 billion in Q1 2024, marking an impressive 81% growth and hitting a two-year high. Factors such as asset appreciation and the introduction of liquid restaking have fueled this surge in TVL, with Messari reporting a 65.6% increase in DeFi collateral to a total of $101 billion.

The surge in Ethereum’s total value of assets can be largely attributed to asset price appreciation and liquid restaking practices, with Lido and EigenLayer emerging as key players in the DeFi renaissance. Liquid staking TVL hit an all-time high of $63 billion on March 13, predominantly driven by Lido’s Ethereum liquid staking protocol, which now commands a 62% market share. EigenLayer, the liquidity restaking protocol, experienced a staggering 990% rise in its TVL, reaching $12 billion by the end of the quarter.

In addition to liquid restaking, increased user activity has also contributed significantly to the growth of DeFi TVL. QuickNode reported a 29.1% surge in user activity in the most recent quarter, igniting hopes for a second “DeFi Summer” despite regulatory uncertainties in the space.

However, the recent downturn in the cryptocurrency market has led to a decline in the value of DeFi TVL, currently standing at $86.6 billion, reflecting an 11% decrease. The broader market slump has impacted the overall value locked in DeFi protocols, causing this dip in TVL.

As the crypto market continues to evolve, liquid restaking is poised to revolutionize the DeFi landscape, driving TVL to unprecedented heights and reshaping the future of decentralized finance.
