UBS recommends locking in attractive real yields with this inflation-protected investment

Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we provide expert insights and unique perspectives on all things investing. Today, we are discussing the benefits of investing in Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) and how investors can take advantage of the current market conditions.

According to UBS, investors can lock in attractive real yields by investing in TIPS, particularly in the 7-year to 10-year maturity range. TIPS provide investors with the opportunity to earn a real return that is adjusted for inflation, making them an attractive option for those looking to hedge against rising prices. Currently, U.S. 10-year TIPS are yielding about 2.22%, up from around 1.7% to 1.8% at the start of the year.

Leslie Falconio, head of taxable fixed income strategy at UBS Americas’ chief investment office, notes that despite shifting sentiments in the market, longer-end inflation expectations have remained anchored. This has led to rising real yields further out the curve, presenting investors with the opportunity to lock in attractive returns ahead of expected falling nominal yields later in the year.

As the Federal Reserve indicates a potential decrease in the fed funds rate, investors are reassessing their interest rate expectations. This has resulted in rising nominal yields, but Falconio believes that declining nominal yields in the second half of the year will benefit TIPS performance. Additionally, Series I bonds, which have a variable interest rate based on inflation, can also be a valuable option for fixed-income investors.
