Numerous ex-employees intend to file discrimination lawsuits against Bowlero

Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we bring you the latest updates and unique insights on business news. Today, we dive into the case involving former employees suing Bowlero, the world’s largest owner and operator of bowling centers, for age discrimination and retaliation.

Dozens of former employees who claimed they were fired based on their age or out of retaliation are planning to sue Bowlero after the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) closed its case against the company. The investigation, which involved more than 70 former employees, began in 2016 and resulted in findings of reasonable cause in 58 of the complaints brought against Bowlero.

Despite Bowlero’s denial of the claims, the EEOC determined a “pattern or practice” of age discrimination within the company since at least 2013. The investigation recently closed, allowing the former employees to pursue their own lawsuits. Attorney Daniel Dowe, representing the claimants, plans to file a lawsuit seeking $80 million in damages, plus legal fees.

Bowlero, which went public in late 2021 through a special purpose acquisition company, has faced financial impacts and distractions due to the ongoing case. Finance chief Robert Lavan noted that while there has been a financial impact, the main concern was the distraction the investigation caused. Now, with the case behind them, Bowlero aims to focus 100% on its business operations.

The EEOC’s decision to close the case does not clear Bowlero of wrongdoing, and the company’s attorneys are prepared to defend against any claims filed by the former employees. Additionally, a request from a former Bowlero executive to countersue the company was recently denied in court, with potential for a new action to be filed.
