Market Chatter – April 30, 2024

Let’s start with a look at the major Asian stock markets. The NIKKEI 225 saw an increase of 470.90 points, while the Shanghai index decreased by 8.22 points. The Hang Seng and ASX 200 both experienced slight gains, while the SENSEX and Nifty50 in India dipped slightly.

In the currency markets, the AUDUSD and NZDUSD both saw decreases, while the USDJPY and USDCNY showed increases.

Turning to precious metals, both gold and silver saw decreases in price during the day.

In the US, the Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Russell 2000 indices all closed lower for the day. In Canada, both the TSX Composite and TSX 60 ended the day in negative territory. In Brazil, the Bovespa also closed with a decline in points.

In the energy markets, crude oil and Brent both saw price decreases, along with natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil.

Lastly, let’s take a look at the bond market. Various government bond yields fluctuated throughout the day, with Japan, US, Bunds, and other European countries seeing changes in their yields.
