JetBlue Airways announced major route cuts in an effort to reduce costs and improve financial performance. This decision was made following a failed attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines and an engine issue that grounded some Airbus planes.
The airline will reduce its departures from Los Angeles International Airport and end flights to various destinations including Bogota, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; Lima, Peru; and Kansas City, Missouri. JetBlue will focus on profitable transcontinental routes with its Mint business class cabin, as well as “bread and butter” routes along the East Coast and Caribbean vacation destinations.
CEO Joanna Geraghty is facing pressure to cut expenses and return the airline to profitability after activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed a nearly 10% stake in the carrier. JetBlue had already started a cost-cutting program before Icahn’s involvement and plans to reduce expenses by $200 million by the end of the year.
Despite these changes, JetBlue expects its planned capacity for the year to be down only in the low single digits from 2023. The airline is now focusing on its path as a stand-alone carrier after the failure to purchase Spirit Airlines and a thwarted partnership with American Airlines in the Northeast.
