Wolfe Research declares financials to be a ‘stealth bull market’

Are you looking to capitalize on the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cuts? Well, according to Chris Senyek, chief investment strategist at Wolfe Research, now is the time to focus on the financial sector. Senyek believes that the ongoing pressure on longer-term yields will benefit financial stocks, making them a lucrative investment opportunity.

At Extreme Investor Network, we are echoing Senyek’s sentiments and advising our readers to overweight their portfolios with financials. The sector has been quietly outperforming the market, with a remarkable 18.1% gain so far this year, slightly ahead of the S&P 500’s 17.8% increase. This sector is proving to be a “stealth bull market underneath the surface,” as highlighted by Senyek.

Goldman Sachs, in particular, stands out as a top performer in the financial sector. With gains of over 30% in 2024, the stock has surpassed many of its competitors. Senyek notes that, except for a few outliers, Goldman Sachs has outperformed the overall market, making it an attractive investment option.

As the yield curve is expected to steepen, creating a more favorable environment for banks’ lending margins, now is an opportune time to buy into financials. This shift in the yield curve will reverse the inverted curve that has been present in the market for the past two years, providing a boost to financial institutions.

In addition to Goldman Sachs, other big bank stocks such as JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup have also outpaced the broader market this year, with gains of 28.5% and 20.3%, respectively. Regional banks, represented by the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF, have also seen significant gains, up more than 17% quarter to date in anticipation of a lower-rate environment.
