As Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) prepares to release its third-quarter earnings report, anticipation is high following a strong second-quarter performance that surpassed expectations. Analysts are estimating revenues around $86.4 billion for the third quarter, with Google’s U.S. revenues expected to be $40.6 billion and international revenues at $45 billion. Additionally, the company is projected to report earnings per share of $1.84.
In the previous quarter, Google exceeded Wall Street’s expectations with nearly $85 billion in revenue, marking a 14% year-over-year increase. Notably, Google’s Cloud division reached over $10 billion in quarterly revenues for the first time, with operating profit surpassing $1 billion. Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the company’s momentum in Search and Cloud, emphasizing ongoing innovation in artificial intelligence (AI).
Google has been making significant strides in advancing AI capabilities, particularly in developing software for models that mimic human reasoning abilities. By focusing on “reasoning” capabilities in large language models, such as with chain-of-thought prompting, Google aims to enhance complex problem-solving skills in AI systems. This approach allows the models to navigate multistep problems using a series of intermediate reasoning steps, similar to human thought processes. OpenAI also introduced its own “reasoning” model series, OpenAI o1, in September.
Furthermore, Google is enhancing its Gemini chatbot’s reasoning abilities, as demonstrated by the release of its fastest and most cost-efficient model, 1.5 Flash, in the unpaid version of Gemini. These developments underscore Google’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology and leveraging it across various applications.
As investors await Alphabet’s earnings report, Google’s shares saw a modest increase during Monday morning trading. With the company’s stock up 20.5% year-to-date, stakeholders are closely monitoring the upcoming earnings release for potential insights into Google’s financial performance and strategic direction.
