Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we provide unique insights and analysis on the latest trends in the world of investing. Today, we are diving into the impact of the U.S. presidential election on the stock market, as outlined by Bank of America.
According to Bank of America’s equity and quant strategist Ohsung Kwon, the upcoming election will undoubtedly be a major catalyst for equities this week. However, Kwon doesn’t anticipate a significant move in the S&P 500, as historical data shows that only a quarter of Election Days have resulted in a 2% or more market reaction. Kwon emphasizes that profits matter more for stocks than politics, and the election will likely remove any lingering uncertainties in the market.
In the event of a Republican clean sweep, with former President Donald Trump back in the White House and Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, Kwon predicts a favorable response for industrial, consumer discretionary, and financial stocks due to Trump’s deregulation agenda. Conversely, a Democratic clean sweep, with Vice President Kamala Harris and a Democratic majority in Congress, could lead to a 5% earnings hit for stocks, particularly in consumer discretionary, communications services, and financials.
On the other hand, a split in control between the White House and Congress could result in a more neutral stance for equities, with a focus shifting back to economic fundamentals. Kwon suggests that buying the dip on a pullback in stocks could be a smart move in this scenario, especially if the Harris administration increases fiscal spending.
Looking ahead, Kwon highlights that the price momentum for stocks post-election tends to continue for the next few weeks, based on historical trends. Additionally, he forecasts that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates multiple times in the future, aligning with BofA’s outlook on a moderating labor market.
