Singapore Airlines Introduces First Class Cabin on Longest Flights

Singapore Airlines is set to introduce a four-seat first-class cabin on its Airbus A350-900 URLs, the ultra-long-range aircraft used for its longest routes. These new seats are aimed at attracting high-spending travelers to flights that can exceed 17 hours, including the grueling journey between New York and Singapore.

But that’s not all – the airline is also revamping its cabin interiors on long-haul Airbus planes, with a focus on enhancing the business-class experience. Passengers can expect new business-class seats that may feature a suite with a sliding door, a design trend that offers privacy as a key onboard perk.

CEO Goh Choon Phong revealed that the upcoming first- and business-class cabins will boast new in-flight entertainment systems, promising to “push the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity.” This move aligns with the industry-wide trend of airlines investing heavily in premium cabins to cater to discerning travelers seeking more space and comfort.

In addition to the new first-class seats, Singapore Airlines will also be revamping the cabins of 34 long-range Airbus A350s as part of a multi-million-dollar overhaul. These updated aircraft will feature a total of 42 business-class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 192 standard economy seats.

Meanwhile, American Airlines is taking a similar approach by retrofitting some of its Boeing 777s to include a 70-seat business class, replacing separate first- and business-class cabins. The airline is also upgrading its business-class seats on 777s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners to include sliding doors, catering to the post-pandemic demand for premium seating options.

While most U.S. carriers have phased out long-haul first-class cabins in favor of larger business class, some carriers like Lufthansa are bucking the trend. The German airline is set to debut new first-class “suites” on Nov. 9, showcasing a commitment to offering top-tier luxury on select routes.
