Fed Caution and Weak Consumer Sentiment Support Silver Amid Dollar Strength
As the US dollar continues its upward trend, driven by hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve (Fed) officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining higher interest rates in the face of elevated inflation, silver finds support amidst dollar strength. Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson reiterated the need to keep rates steady until inflation shows signs of easing, a sentiment echoed by other Fed officials.
Investors are closely monitoring the upcoming Producer Price Index (PPI) report, which has the potential to impact market sentiment. Recent surveys by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveal that US consumers anticipate a rise in inflation over the next year, with expectations reaching 3.3%.
While some Fed officials like Neel Kashkari are cautious about tightening monetary policy, others like San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly emphasize the importance of maintaining a restrictive policy to achieve the Fed’s inflation goals.
In recent data releases, the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to a six-month low of 67.4 in May from 77.2 in April, falling short of expectations. However, the UoM 5-year Consumer Inflation Expectation rose to a six-month high of 3.1%, up from 3.0%.
Looking ahead, the US PPI for April is expected to rise by 2.2% year-over-year (YoY), with Core PPI increasing by 2.4% YoY. Additionally, US Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is forecasted to ease to 3.4% YoY in April from 3.5%, while Core CPI inflation is projected to drop to 3.6% YoY from 3.8% in March.
Geopolitical Escalation Spurs Safe-Haven Demand for Silver
On the geopolitical front, recent developments in Gaza have heightened tensions as Israeli soldiers moved into the northern area to reclaim territory from Hamas militants. The situation escalated further as tanks and troops pushed into Rafah, causing Palestinian residents to flee. This geopolitical turmoil has sparked safe-haven demand for silver, adding another layer of support to the precious metal amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
