Quarterly Personal Computer Shipments Soar, Apple Leads in Biggest Gains

Apple Inc. Surpasses Competitors with 21% Increase in PC Shipments

In the ever-evolving world of technology, Apple Inc. has once again proven its dominance by reporting a whopping 21% gain in personal computer shipments in the second quarter. This impressive growth is the largest jump among global PC makers, highlighting a budding industry recovery that has resulted in a second consecutive period of growth.

According to a report from IDC, an industry research firm, worldwide shipments of desktops and laptops increased by 3% from a year earlier in the period ended in June. Apple, along with Acer Inc., which posted a jump of about 14%, experienced the largest growth in shipments among major manufacturers. This surge in demand can be attributed to two consecutive quarters of growth, as well as the market buzz surrounding AI PCs and a crucial commercial refresh cycle.

The PC industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, with historic declines following a surge in purchases during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. However, the latest results indicate that a cycle of new purchases is now underway. Computer makers are leveraging AI PCs, a new type of device designed specifically for artificial intelligence tasks, to drive a new wave of upgrades. Despite this trend, IDC reports that only about 3% of PCs shipped this year will be AI-optimized.

In the midst of this industry upswing, Dell Technologies Inc. experienced a slight decrease of 2.4% in shipments, making it the only major company to see a decline. On the other hand, Lenovo Group Ltd. commanded the highest market share at almost 23%, while HP Inc. saw an increase of 1.8% from a year earlier and held the position of the second-biggest PC maker with 21% of the market.

While the overall results were positive, weak demand in China hindered the growth potential — excluding that country, worldwide shipments actually grew by more than 5%, according to IDC.
