Are you tired of being cramped in standard coach seats on long flights? Well, Delta Air Lines has some exciting news for you! They announced that they will be bringing their premium economy service to transcontinental flights starting in September. This means more space and perks for passengers willing to splurge a little extra for a more comfortable flying experience.
Premium economy is a relatively new class of service that major airlines offer on longer, mostly international flights. It falls between first or business class and standard economy, with ticket prices often double that of standard coach. Delta, along with rivals like United and JetBlue Airways, is focused on providing more premium seating options to attract higher-spending travelers.
In a move to capitalize on higher-spending travelers, Delta reported that ticket revenue from their main cabin rose 4% in the first quarter to $5.4 billion, while premium-product revenue increased by 10% to $4.4 billion. The added service will initially start on four of the peak-day flights between Los Angeles and New York’s JFK International Airport on Boeing 767s, with plans to expand service later this year.
Delta customers who purchase standard economy tickets will have the option to upgrade to premium economy on transcontinental flights. Additionally, Medallion elite members of Delta’s loyalty program will be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Delta Premium Select. They will also have the opportunity to list for upgrades to Delta One, the airline’s top-tier product, on those flights.
Some American Airlines’ shorter domestic flights operate a similar model, featuring lie-flat seats but not the flagship service offered on international flights. This move from Delta is part of an overall trend in the industry to cater to travelers looking for a more luxurious flying experience.
