Boeing Delivers 33 Aircraft in September Amid Strike Impact
Boeing, a global leader in aerospace manufacturing, recently announced the delivery of 33 airplanes in September, marking a significant increase from the previous year. This news comes amidst an ongoing machinist strike, now in its fourth week, which has raised concerns about the company’s production capabilities and financial performance.
Through September, Boeing has handed over a total of 291 aircraft, a notable decrease compared to the same period in 2023. In contrast, rival Airbus has delivered 447 airplanes this year through August, highlighting the competitive landscape in the aerospace industry.
The recent deliveries were primarily driven by Boeing’s popular 737 Max aircraft, with major customers like United Airlines, Ryanair, and Southwest Airlines receiving multiple units. These deliveries are crucial for Boeing, as customers typically pay the bulk of the price upon receiving the aircraft, contributing significantly to the company’s revenue stream.
The aircraft are produced at Boeing’s facility in Renton, Washington, where machinists have been on strike since September 13. Despite attempts to reach a resolution, the strike has persisted, creating uncertainty about Boeing’s production schedule and financial outlook.
An interesting observation made by aerospace analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu is that most of the 27 Max aircraft were delivered before the strike began, indicating a potential delay in production ramp-up if the strike continues. Boeing is expected to provide more insights on the financial impact of the strike when it reports quarterly results on October 23.
In addition to the 737 Max aircraft, Boeing also delivered four 787 Dreamliners in September, manufactured at the company’s nonunion factory in South Carolina. Overall, Boeing received 66 gross orders for new aircraft, reflecting continued demand for its product offerings.
Despite facing challenges such as the recent 737 Max incident and the ongoing strike, Boeing maintains a strong backlog of 5,456 aircraft, underscoring its position as a key player in the aerospace industry.
