Musk’s Autonomy Drive Suffers a Setback as Tesla Postpones Robotaxi Event

Tesla Inc. Postpones Robotaxi Unveiling to October

Tesla Inc. has announced a delay in its planned robotaxi unveiling, pushing the event to October in order to give the teams working on the project more time to build additional prototypes. This decision, which has been communicated internally, will allow the design team to rework certain elements of the car ahead of the new unveiling date.

CEO Elon Musk originally set the unveiling date for August 8th, but the delay has been made to ensure that the robotaxi project meets the high expectations set for it. The excitement surrounding the event has contributed to a recent increase in Tesla’s market capitalization, with the stock seeing gains for 11 consecutive days before closing 8.4% lower on Thursday.

The announcement of the delay had a ripple effect on the stock prices of Tesla’s potential competitors in the autonomous taxi service space. Shares of Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. both surged following the news, with Uber’s stock rising 6.1% and Lyft’s shares jumping 4.6%.

The concept of a Tesla autonomous taxi service has been in the works for years, with Musk making it a priority over developing a lower-cost electric vehicle. Tesla has been marketing its Full Self-Driving (FSD) features to customers, although the technology is not fully autonomous and requires constant supervision. Despite a decrease in vehicle deliveries in the first half of the year, Tesla has been bullish about its autonomous-vehicle technology as sales have slowed.
