One of the perks of being a U.S. citizen or resident alien living outside the country is an automatic two-month extension to file your taxes, extending the deadline to June 17. To qualify for this extension, you must either live outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico or serve in the military abroad during the regular tax deadline. It’s important to note that although the extension is automatic, you must attach a statement to your return explaining your situation.
If you find yourself unable to meet the June 17 deadline, don’t panic. You can file for a tax extension, which will give you an additional four months to file your taxes. Simply file Form 4868 by June 17 to extend the filing due date to Oct. 15.

For example, certain expats must report foreign bank accounts by filing the Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) if the combined account value exceeds $10,000 at any time during the year.
