How to capitalize on the heating up utilities market in the midst of rate cuts

Are you considering investing in the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) to capitalize on the new growth phase in electricity demand? While the ETF has seen a significant increase in value over the past year, there is still potential for smart investors to benefit from this sector.

At Extreme Investor Network, we believe that the future of electricity demand in the country is promising, with the rise of electric vehicles and the transition to electric farm and construction equipment. Additionally, data centers are experiencing a new growth phase, further contributing to the increased demand for electricity.

Despite the strong performance of the utilities select sector index, it still trades at a relatively cheap multiple compared to the S & P. In light of the recent half-point rate cut by the Fed, which signals a more aggressive policy response, investing in XLU can prove to be advantageous. Lower rates not only stimulate the economy but also make utilities more attractive to fixed-income investors.

One strategy to consider is to purchase a longer-dated call option on XLU, financed partly by the sale of a nearer-dated strangle. This approach provides upside exposure and a higher standstill yield than simply holding the ETF.

For example, you could sell an Oct. 25 $75 XLU put, buy a Jan. 17 $78 XLU call, and sell an Oct. 25 $81 XLU call. This strategy allows you to potentially benefit from XLU’s performance while adding a buffer of protection.
