Accelerating Tokenisation Adoption in the Financial Sector
The HKMA has officially launched Project Ensemble Sandbox, a strategic initiative aimed at fast-tracking the adoption of tokenisation within the financial sector. This project is set to revolutionize the way interbank settlements are conducted using experimental tokenised money.
Key Highlights of Project Ensemble Sandbox
The Sandbox allows participating banks to integrate their tokenised deposit platforms, enabling experiments for interbank payment-versus-payment and delivery-versus-payment settlements. The initial experimentation will focus on fixed income and investment funds, liquidity management, green and sustainable finance, as well as trade and supply chain finance.
Regulatory Support and Collaborations
To ensure sustainable growth in the tokenised asset market, the HKMA will collaborate with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) to establish a robust regulatory framework. Additionally, international collaborations with the BIS Innovation Hub Hong Kong Centre and the CBDC Expert Group will further bolster the Sandbox initiative.
