According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the August jobs report highlighted growth in industries such as leisure and hospitality, as well as health care and social assistance. These sectors added more than 40,000 jobs each, indicating positive momentum in these areas of the economy.
Interestingly, when private education is included within the health-care group, the total job growth in that category increases to 47,000 jobs. However, other industries experienced conflicting data in the report. While construction saw a notable increase of 34,000 jobs, manufacturing lost 24,000 jobs. Similarly, professional and business services saw a slight uptick of 8,000 jobs, but the information sector lost 7,000 jobs.
Former Department of Labor chief economist Betsey Stevenson commented on the report, noting that the job growth is primarily coming from leisure and hospitality, health and education services, and government sectors. However, she highlighted a lack of growth in business and professional services, suggesting a slowdown in the overall economy.
Even within the stronger categories, there were signs of a temporary slowdown. For example, the health-care subsector added 31,000 jobs, which is about half of its average over the prior 12 months.
