Apple iPhone fans in Beijing are flocking to Huawei’s trifold device as it gains popularity

Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we provide exclusive insights and analysis on the latest financial trends and developments. Today, we delve into the smartphone market in China, where Apple and Huawei are battling it out for consumer attention.

On the day of the highly anticipated iPhone 16 and Mate XT launch in China, CNBC found that many affluent iPhone users are also interested in Huawei’s pricier trifold phone. Out of 10 people surveyed, 8 expressed interest in both brands, highlighting the competitive nature of the market.

Huawei has been working to rebuild its smartphone business following U.S. sanctions in 2019. The company currently holds the fourth position in China’s smartphone market share, while Apple has dropped out of the top five. This shift has allowed domestic players to dominate the market for the first time.

When it comes to pricing, the disparity between Apple and Huawei’s flagship models is stark. The iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199, while the Mate XT starts at over $2,800, making it a luxury item for consumers.

Interestingly, the price gap is even more evident on online resale platforms. The Mate XT was listed for 50,000 to 60,000 yuan ($7,100 to $8,520), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max was selling for 10,500 to 16,300 yuan. This demonstrates the demand and perceived value of each brand in the market.

Despite the popularity of the iPhone launch, there were no lines outside Huawei stores in Beijing and Hefei. Instead, the company focused on delivering the new phones to customers who had reserved the trifold device. The lack of queues outside Huawei stores in comparison to Apple highlights the different strategies employed by the two companies.
