Beverly Hills doctor files lawsuit against Medtronic for violating patents

The Battle for Innovation: Surgeon Sues Medtronic Over Stolen Hernia Design

At Extreme Investor Network, we always keep an eye on groundbreaking stories like this one involving Dr. Shirin Towfigh and medical device giant Medtronic. Towfigh, a Beverly Hills surgeon with over 22 years of experience, believed she had created a medical device that could revolutionize hernia care for women. However, her excitement turned to disappointment when she discovered her patented design had been allegedly stolen by Medtronic.

A Surgeon’s Quest for Better Patient Outcomes

Towfigh’s journey began when she noticed a pattern among her female hernia patients experiencing post-surgery complications. She realized that existing mesh designs in the market were primarily suited for the male anatomy. Determined to improve outcomes for women, Towfigh filed for an international patent in 2016 for a new design tailored to female anatomy.

The Lawsuit Unfolds

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware, Towfigh accuses Medtronic of stealing her design after the two parties had signed a mutual non-disclosure agreement. Following their meeting in 2015 and a visit to Medtronic’s manufacturing site in France in 2016, Towfigh claims that Medtronic launched a hernia mesh product in 2020, named Dextile, that closely resembled her patent-pending design.

A Pattern of Alleged Patent Infringement

This isn’t the first time Medtronic has faced patent infringement allegations. Previously, the company was sued by Dr. Mark Barry in 2014 and ordered to pay $23.5 million for violating his spinal correction patents. In a separate case with Edwards Lifesciences, Medtronic settled for over $1 billion for patent infringement related to their CoreValve product.
