Polaris Dawn crew makes history with first spacewalk conducted by SpaceX

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of private spaceflight, SpaceX is leading the charge with remarkable milestones like the recent spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission. This historic event marked the first time civilians, Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis, stepped outside of SpaceX’s Dragon capsule “Resilience.” The successful completion of this spacewalk signifies a significant achievement for the company in its mission to send people to other planets.

The Polaris Dawn spacewalk, also known as an extravehicular activity (EVA), lasted about two hours in total, with the crew testing the mobility of the spacesuits in the vacuum of space. SpaceX, along with the Polaris Program led by Jared Isaacman, has been diligently working on developing suits that can withstand the harsh environment of space. The crew of four, including mission specialist Gillis and medical officer Anna Menon, embarked on this groundbreaking mission to not only advance space exploration but also to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

In addition to the spacewalk, the Polaris Dawn mission reached an orbit of more than 1,400 kilometers from Earth, the furthest humans have traveled in space since the Apollo program. The crew is also conducting approximately 40 science and research experiments onboard the spacecraft as part of this pioneering journey.

Jared Isaacman, the commander of Polaris Dawn and the benefactor behind the mission, is no stranger to space travel, having led the Inspiration4 mission in 2021. He views the Polaris Program as a way to inspire and excite people about the future possibilities of private spaceflight. Isaacman believes that anything different from what has been seen in the past few decades can spark curiosity and anticipation for what the future holds in the realm of space exploration.
