Cooper Union College Restores Graduating Seniors’ Free Tuition

Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we provide unique insights and valuable information on personal finance. In today’s blog post, we’re discussing the recent announcement from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science about returning to full-tuition scholarships for graduating seniors.

Cooper Union, a private college based in New York City, was founded in 1859 and had historically been tuition-free for all grade levels. However, in 2014, they shifted to offering only half-tuition scholarships. Now, after a 10-year plan that involved saving, cost-cutting, and fundraising, the school has restored full-tuition scholarships for all graduating seniors. Roughly half of the student body currently attends tuition-free, with undergraduates paying less than 15% of the $44,550 tuition on average.

This move to provide full-tuition scholarships reaffirms the institution’s commitment to its founding ideals. Outgoing school President Laura Sparks expressed gratitude to generous alumni donors for removing a major financial burden for graduating classes. Current seniors will receive refunds for fall semester tuition payments and will not have to pay for the spring semester. Additionally, first-, second-, and third-year students will receive full-tuition scholarships in their senior years.

The decision by Cooper Union echoes a larger trend in the higher education landscape, where colleges and universities are facing challenges with declining enrollment and revenue. As the cost of college continues to rise, many institutions are exploring ways to make education more accessible. By eliminating education debt and making college more affordable, schools can attract more applicants and improve their overall financial stability.

In New York state, initiatives like the Excelsior Scholarship aim to make public college education more accessible to graduating high school seniors. By providing automatic acceptance letters and free-tuition programs, these efforts seek to increase college enrollment and reduce financial barriers for students.
