Commute data reveals that working from 10 to 4 is the new 9 to 5

Are you tired of sitting in traffic during rush hour? Well, you’re not alone. Commuting patterns have shifted dramatically since the pandemic, leading to a new normal in traffic congestion.

According to a recent report by INRIX Inc., the traditional American 9-to-5 workday has shifted to a 10-to-4 schedule. This means that fewer workers are making early morning or early evening trips, and more trips are being made in the afternoon. In fact, there is now a “midday rush hour” with almost as many trips being made at noon as there are at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

One of the reasons for this shift is the increased flexibility that employees have in their working arrangements. Many workers have grown accustomed to the option of working from home and only coming into the office when absolutely necessary. This has led to a phenomenon known as “coffee badging,” where employees only come into the office for a few hours a day.

But while this flexibility has its benefits, it has also led to employee burnout and decreased workplace engagement. A Gallup poll found that only one-third of employees are engaged in their work and workplace, while approximately 50% are not engaged. This lack of engagement can lead to a loss of productivity and even “quiet quitting.”

So, what can companies do to address these challenges? It’s important for organizations to clearly communicate their expectations around working arrangements and provide support for employees’ mental health and work-life balance. By creating a work environment that prioritizes employee well-being and productivity, companies can set themselves up for long-term success.
