Vanguard CIO believes small-cap stocks remain undervalued despite July rally

At Extreme Investor Network, we believe that small-cap stocks are currently in a prime position for continued growth and success. According to Greg Davis, the president and chief investment officer at Vanguard, the recent rally in small-cap stocks is likely to continue due to a valuation gap and the current economic environment.

Davis pointed out that small-cap stocks still appear relatively cheap compared to some large-cap alternatives, making them an attractive investment opportunity. The small-cap Russell 2000 index is up nearly 10% in July, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. Specifically, small-cap value stocks, such as those in the Vanguard Russell 2000 Value ETF (VTWV), have seen significant growth, up 11.9%.

While the market has been dominated by a few tech giants like Nvidia and Microsoft in recent years, Davis believes that diversifying into small-cap stocks can help mitigate risk. He emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the S&P 500 for broader diversification and potential growth opportunities.

Looking ahead, Davis highlighted that politics and policy will play a crucial role in shaping the market landscape in the second half of 2024. Despite the noise of the election cycle, investors are encouraged to focus on their long-term goals. From a policy perspective, Vanguard anticipates a Federal Reserve rate cut this year, with more cuts expected in 2025, which could benefit the small-cap space.
