Exploring the Future of Blockchain with IOTA Foundation’s DAG Technology Workshop

Recently, the IOTA Foundation hosted a groundbreaking workshop titled ‘Beyond the Chain’ at Trinity College Dublin, shedding light on the potential of Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) technology to revolutionize traditional blockchains.

The workshop, held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Blockchain and Cryptocurrency, showcased how DAG technology can address the limitations of traditional blockchains. Despite being scheduled on the final day of the conference, the event drew substantial interest from attendees.
Keynote Address by Shai Wyborski
Renowned researcher Shai Wyborski took center stage at the workshop, highlighting the efficiency and scalability benefits of transitioning from blockchains to DAG structures. He discussed the challenges of traditional blockchains, such as orphan rates and reduced parallelism, and showcased innovative blockDAG implementations like SPECTRE, Tangle, and GHOSTDAG.
Wyborski also introduced parameterless protocols like DAGKnight, which adapt dynamically to network conditions, enhancing confirmation times and network performance. The keynote address delved into rational miner incentives, fee market models, and innovative consensus mechanisms within DAG structures.

The workshop featured interactive sessions based on research papers submitted by industry experts.
Secure IoT Data Transmission
Andreas Baumgartner presented a paper on secure data transmission for IoT services using DAG-based DLT IOTA Streams, addressing challenges in payload sizes and duty cycle regulations.
Shared Objects in Smart Contracts
Roman Overko explored shared objects in Sui smart contracts, analyzing transaction frequency and contention levels.
Name Management with IOTA
Teppei Okada proposed a method to prevent content poisoning attacks in information-centric networking using IOTA’s distributed ledger technology.
Consensus Protocols Systematization
Mayank Raikwar and team evaluated DAG-based consensus protocols and their impact on performance and tradeoffs.
Looking to the Future
The ‘Beyond the Chain’ workshop underscored the potential of DAG-based DLTs to overcome blockchain limitations. Our relentless pursuit of cutting-edge technology and research in this field will be highlighted in the upcoming workshop at the University of Pisa in June 2025.
