Welcome to Extreme Investor Network, where we provide exclusive insights and analysis on the latest developments in the global economy. Today, we are excited to bring you a live stream of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell participating in a panel discussion at the European Central Bank Forum on Central Banking in Sintra, Portugal.
Joining Powell on the panel are ECB President Christine Lagarde and Brazil Central Bank Governor Roberto Campos Neto. CNBC’s Sara Eisen will be moderating the discussion as these central bank policymakers address the current inflation dynamics and their implications on monetary policy.
In the U.S., the Federal Reserve, under Powell’s leadership, has maintained its main policy rate unchanged for the past year despite inflation rates easing from their mid-2022 peaks. Meanwhile, Lagarde’s ECB recently announced a quarter-percentage-point cut, bringing its rate down to 4.25%, and Neto’s bank also made a quarter-point cut in May, lowering its primary rate to 10.5%.
Investors are closely monitoring the central banks’ actions, with expectations that the Fed will begin cutting rates in September and continue to do so quarterly through at least September 2025. However, Fed officials have hinted at just one rate cut this year, causing some uncertainty in the markets.
