WNBA Records Highest TV Viewership and Game Attendance in 26 Years

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is experiencing a surge in popularity, with record-breaking viewership and attendance numbers for the current season. According to the league, the 28th season, which began on May 14, has seen the highest TV ratings in the history of the league. Across networks like ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and CBS, the WNBA is averaging 1.3 million viewers per game, a significant increase from last season’s average of 462,000 viewers.

One of the key factors driving this growth in fan engagement is the league’s powerful rookie class. Standout players like Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky have not only impressed on the court but have also contributed to a 236% jump in merchandise sales year over year. Jersey sales for these rising stars have been particularly strong, reflecting the growing popularity of women’s basketball.

In addition to the increased viewership, the WNBA has also seen more diverse audiences tuning in to games. The league reported a 60% year-over-year increase in viewership among people of color, as well as a doubling of viewership for young girls and individuals under the age of 35 in the first week of the season.
