Insurance companies face increased volatility due to climate change

As experts in all things money at Extreme Investor Network, we are always on the lookout for valuable insights and information to help our readers make smart financial decisions. Today, we are diving into the world of insurance with a focus on recent comments made by Chubb CEO Evan Greenberg.

In a recent interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Greenberg highlighted the impact of climate change on the insurance industry. According to Greenberg, climate change has led to increased volatility, particularly in regions where the impact of climate change is most severe. This has contributed to rising insurance prices and challenges for insurers like Chubb.

In addition to climate change, Greenberg also pointed to general inflation and litigation costs as driving factors behind the rise in insurance prices. He emphasized that litigation is a “money-making industry” that constantly evolves with new theories of liability, ultimately passing these costs onto corporate America and consumers.

Chubb, known for insuring businesses, wealthy individuals, and agriculture, has a significant presence both in the U.S. and abroad. Greenberg noted that North America and Asia are Chubb’s two biggest regions, with strong potential for economic growth in the coming years.

On a positive note, Chubb’s shares saw a boost when Warren Buffett revealed the company as Berkshire Hathaway’s secret stock pick. As of mid-May, Chubb’s shares were up 16.7% year-to-date, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s performance.

One interesting tidbit is Chubb’s involvement in high-profile cases, such as providing former President Donald Trump with a $91.6 million appeal bond in a defamation lawsuit. However, the company later opted out of providing Trump with a $464 million appeal bond in a separate civil fraud case.
