A gradual cooling of the labor market has made it tougher to find a new job, but overall conditions are still favorable for job seekers. According to Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, “Don’t get discouraged; there are opportunities out there. This is still a strong labor market.”
Signs of a cooling labor market
National job openings in April fell to their lowest level in more than three years, signaling a potential weakening in the job market. However, there are indicators that the U.S. job market remains strong and resilient despite headwinds, according to economists. Total job openings still exceed their pre-pandemic peak, the layoff rate has remained low, and the national unemployment rate has been below 4% since February 2022.
But there’s strength, too
The job market has slackened from red-hot levels in 2021 and 2022, known as the “great resignation” period. While the current job market may feel different from the booming market of previous years, it is more sustainable and may lead to a gradual lowering of borrowing costs for consumers by the Federal Reserve.
Be prepared for more competition
Job seekers should be prepared for more competition in the current job market. Julia Pollak suggests being proactive and applying to jobs frequently, putting your best foot forward, and staying persistent in your job search. While the job market may feel more challenging, there are still good matches being formed, and stability can be found in the labor market.
