Oracle and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Advance Electronic Healthcare Record System
Oracle and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have extended their partnership to enhance the electronic healthcare record (EHR) system, with the goal of providing a secure and interoperable medical record for veterans. This collaboration signifies a commitment to improving veterans’ healthcare services through technological advancements.
Progress in Modernization Efforts
Over the past two years, Oracle and the VA have made significant progress in modernizing the EHR system. These efforts are aimed at improving the lives of both VA practitioners and the veterans they serve. Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, expressed pride in continuing to support the mission of providing superior healthcare services to veterans.
Verma stated, “VA’s plan to resume deployments in the next fiscal year is a notable milestone that reflects the collaborative work done to enhance the system today and the confidence in our ability to continuously evolve the EHR to meet the needs of practitioners and patients.”
Successful Implementation and Future Plans
The joint Department of Defense (DOD) and VA EHR system, MHS GENESIS, has been successfully implemented at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (Lovell FHCC). This achievement caps off a five-year project to deliver the federal EHR system to the DOD. Currently, MHS GENESIS is operational at 3,890 garrison facilities, serving over 9.5 million beneficiaries in the U.S., Europe, and the Asia Pacific region. This system provides service members with a single, comprehensive health record from enlistment through lifelong care at VA facilities.
The federal EHR system will enable the VA to standardize workflows, training, and technology management across its facilities using a single enterprise system. It allows for better coordination with federal and commercial partners, such as the DOD, the Coast Guard, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The system’s flexibility supports the adoption of new solutions to improve usability and safety over time.
Verma emphasized, “Our recent deployment at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL exceeded expectations and showcased the possibilities as we progress with other VA facilities. Our veterans and their caregivers deserve a top-tier EHR system, and we are delivering on that promise.”
This contract extension aligns with a letter from Secretary McDonough to the Congressional Appropriations Committees dated May 31, 2024, outlining the VA’s plans to continue EHR deployments in the upcoming fiscal year.
