Harley-Davidson Backtracks on Diversity Initiatives Following Online Criticism

In a statement released on social media, Harley-Davidson announced that it has ceased consulting the Human Rights Campaign’s metric for treatment of LGBTQ+ employees. The company also revealed that its sponsorship decisions will now be determined internally, with a focus on “retaining our loyal riding community.”

Interestingly, Harley-Davidson stated that it does not currently have a DEI function and has not had one since April. The company also made it clear that it rejects hiring quotas and “socially motivated content” in training, while reaffirming its support for first responders, active military members, and veterans.

This decision comes after conservative activist Robby Starbuck launched an online campaign against Harley-Davidson’s DEI initiatives, claiming that the company had become “woke.” Starbuck’s efforts seem to have paid off, as the company has now shifted its stance on DEI.

However, not everyone is pleased with Harley-Davidson’s decision. Eric Bloem, HRC’s vice president of programs and corporate advocacy, criticized the move, calling it “impulsive” and accusing the company of prioritizing politics over the interests of workers and consumers.

Harley-Davidson’s anti-DEI sentiment is part of a larger trend, with Tractor Supply Company also eliminating DEI roles earlier this year. These changes come in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down affirmative action in colleges, which has raised concerns about the future of DEI initiatives in the corporate world.
