FTC alleges H&R Block engaged in deceptive marketing and data wiping regarding tax filer information

Unveiling the Truth Behind H&R Block’s Deceptive Marketing Tactics

At Extreme Investor Network, we strive to provide our readers with valuable insights and information that can help them navigate the complex world of finance and investments. In line with this mission, we are shedding light on a recent development that has raised eyebrows in the tax preparation industry.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently filed an administrative complaint against H&R Block, one of the leading tax preparation companies in the United States. The complaint alleges that H&R Block deceptively marketed free filing products to consumers, leading many to believe they were eligible for these services when they were not.

One of the key issues highlighted in the complaint is the practice of “data wiping,” where H&R Block would delete a user’s in-progress tax return information, forcing them to start the process all over again if they wanted to downgrade to a free product. This tactic not only inconvenienced consumers but also pressured them into purchasing more expensive products.

Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, emphasized that H&R Block’s online products were designed to create obstacles for consumers, ultimately pushing them towards overpaying for services they did not need. This deceptive marketing strategy has rightfully come under scrutiny from consumer advocates and regulatory bodies.

This is not the first time the FTC has taken action against tax filing software providers for deceptive practices. In a similar move, the commission recently banned Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, from engaging in misleading advertising after finding that the company had violated federal law by marketing free software to ineligible filers.

As consumers navigate the tax filing season, it is essential to be aware of alternative options for free filing. The IRS offers several initiatives, including a Direct File pilot program and IRS Free File, which provide free guided software for filers with lower incomes. These options can help taxpayers avoid falling prey to deceptive marketing tactics and ensure they make informed choices when preparing their taxes.
