Climate change contributes to 21% increase in home insurance premiums in 2023

At Extreme Investor Network, we understand the importance of staying informed about changes in the personal finance landscape, especially when it comes to homeowners insurance. If you’re preparing to renew your policy, you may be in for some unexpected news.

According to a recent report by Policygenius, home insurance prices rose an average of 21% between May 2022 and May 2023 at renewal time. This significant jump can be attributed to the rise in catastrophic severe weather events, and experts predict that the trend of price increases is unlikely to slow down anytime soon. As insurers face higher costs due to these weather-related risks, they pass those expenses along to consumers in the form of pricier premiums.

Carlos Martín, director of the Remodeling Futures program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, highlights the changing landscape of risks that properties are exposed to. He emphasizes the confusion among both homeowners and insurers in determining how to accurately price these risks.

Understanding the impact of severe weather on insurance premiums can be challenging, as insurers do not publicly share individual homeowners’ premium data. This lack of transparency makes it difficult to assess how climate risk is factored into policy prices.

While the cost of home insurance may be on the rise, homeowners in high-risk areas such as flood or fire zones may find themselves with limited options. Insurance companies have been pulling back in these vulnerable regions, making it harder for homeowners to secure coverage.
